Being exposed to UV rays without the right protection increases the risk of sunburn and skin cancer, no matter your skin type or colour. Apply at least SPF 30, 30 minutes before going outside. And don’t forget to re-apply throughout the day, even on cloudy days! 2. LEAVE YOUR HAT ON
Sightseeing in the city? Walking along the waterfront? Always wear a hat and sunglasses in addition to sunscreen to maximize protection for your face. Luckily this timeless combo looks pretty cool, too.
3. CHOOSE A SHADY SPOT
Looking for a space to nap or lay a picnic? A shady corner beneath a tree is always a good idea. Seek shade often to give your skin a break when you’re out and about.
4. AVOID DIRECT SUN AT MIDDAY
The sun is strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm, so best to avoid direct sunlight at this time. The strength of the sun’s rays can also increase if you’re surrounded by water or snow due the reflective surfaces.
5. SAY NO TO SUNBEDS
Research suggests that tanning beds are closely linked with skin cancer, so best to avoid them at all costs. Stick to tinted moisturizers to pamper your skin while creating a natural-looking tan.
“I DON’T BURN SO MY SKIN WON’T GET DAMAGED IN THE SUN”
Wrong! Just because your skin doesn’t burn doesn’t mean it’s immune to sun damage. Exposure to UVA rays can cause premature skin aging, as well as deep unseen damage that can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life.
“IT’S WINTER SO I DON’T NEED TO WEAR SUNSCREEN”
Wrong again! Despite the colder weather, snow, and darker days the sun’s harmful rays are just as strong and potentially damaging for skin. While you might have less skin exposed and you’re potentially spending less time outside in the winter you’re still at risk for sun damage.
“I’VE ALREADY GOT A TAN SO I WON’T BURN”
Most definitely wrong! Your sun tan gives really minor protection from the sun and is a tell-tale sign that your skin has already been damaged. Use sun protection no matter how tanned you are!
“ALL YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR IS SPF”
You’ve guessed it… this is also a total myth. SPF only protects your skin from UVB rays, when it’s important to also protect against UVA. Always look for products that protect against both!
“IF I WEAR A HAT I DON’T NEED SUNSCREEN ON MY FACE”
Yep, it’s a myth. Even when you’re wearing a sun hat that shades your face, it’s still crucial that you also apply sunscreen. Indirect radiation is still a risk, particularly when you’re wearing a hat in the sun without any other shade.
